Arsenal have one major concern about signing £62m transfer target Matheus Cunha ahead of Chelsea, according to reports.

Cunha has attracted interest from a number of clubs following his impressive performances for Wolves over the past three seasons.

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2023, Cunha has scored 31 goals in 85 appearances for Wolves, continuing to impress this season despite the club getting dragged into a relegation battle.

Cunha was linked with a move away from Wolves during the January transfer window but ended the speculation by signing a new contract at the Midlands club.

The Brazil international insisted he was delighted to extend his stay at Molineux but Wolves are not expected to keep hold of Cunha for much longer as a release clause worth £62m was included in his new deal.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs interested in activating the buy-out clause this summer, but Mikel Arteta reportedly has reservations about bringing the 25-year-old to north London.

talkSPORT say Arteta is concerned about Cunha’s character after some hot-headed moments this season.

Cunha was sent off for violent conduct in Wolves’ recent FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth after lashing out and appearing to headbutt Milos Kerkez.

The Wolves stand-in captain initially refused to leave the pitch and had to be dragged down the tunnel. Already banned for three games, Cunha could face another suspension after being charged with ‘improper conduct’.

Earlier in the season, Cunha was banned for two games and handed an £80,000 fine after clashing with a member of Ipswich Town’s security team.

Despite Cunha’s fiery character, it would come as no surprise if a top club decided to poach him from Wolves this summer, especially as he has scored five goals in six games since the start of February.

Speaking after Cunha’s eventful performance against Bournemouth, Arsenal legend Martin Keown praised his ability but insisted he needed to cut out the uglier parts of his game.

‘The ability he has is top-level. The goal he scores today belongs not in the FA Cup, it belongs in the Champions League, it’s that good,’ he said on Match of the Day.

‘Give him too much space and he does this and that’s Ronaldo-like. That’s top-level, absolutely top-drawer finish.

‘Strikes right through the ball, beautiful, keeper isn’t getting anywhere near it.

‘Then suddenly, we see the ugly. Kerkez gets involved and then that’s a right, left, kick and a headbutt, it’s the three-card trick really,’ the former defender added.

‘I’ve not seen that on a football pitch since the 70s. He just cannot do that. He just lost it completely.

‘And worse still, they just could not get him out of the ground. In the end the cameras had to come away. This was the ugly part.

‘This is something he has to stop because he has a history of this already. He pulled the glasses off a steward recently so whether it’s going to be three games or more this fella has to play and it’s vital he’s going to be available.

‘They [Wolves] need points to stay up and the Ipswich game is massive. They’re five points clear now but that’s a huge loss they need him back on the pitch.’
