Liverpool 0-1 PSG: Arne Slot’s men crash out of Champions League on penalties | Football

Liverpool have crashed out of the Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain beat them 1-0 and won a penalty shootout on Tuesday night.

Arne Slot’s side won the first leg of the last-16 showdown 1-0 in the French capital last week but Ousmane Dembele netted in the second leg at Anfield to make it 1-1 on aggregate.

Nothing could seperate the two sides after that, forcing a period of extra-time and then a penalty shootout with Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones to book PSG’s spot in the quarter-finals.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Liverpool, who had Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate forced off with injury ahead of the Carabao Cup final showdown with Newcastle United on Sunday.

Desire Doue netted the winning penalty for PSG – who didn’t miss a single spot-kick – with the Ligue 1 champions now set to face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the last eight.

Donnarumma the hero for PSG

‘You’ve got to give PSG big credit’

Alan Shearer has been offering his reaction to the match on Amazon Prime.

‘You’ve seen four perfect penalties under extreme pressure, you’ve got to give PSG big credit,’ Shearer said.

‘The disappointment of losing that first game and playing really, really well and coming back to Anfield and soaking up pressure and then hitting them on the break.

‘Taking it to extra time and penalties and seeing those four perfect penalties, they’ve really put in a magnificent effort over the two games and they’ll say they deserve to go through.’

Both sides looking tired

Alan Shearer just noted on Amazon Prime that both sides are looking quite tired out there. Neither side has looked like scoring in extra-time after those two early chances for PSG.
