Arne Slot rates PSG’s chances of winning Champions League after beating Liverpool | Football

Arne Slot does not rank Paris Saint-Germain among the favourites to win the Champions League despite knocking his Liverpool side out of the competition.

The Premier League leaders exited Europe at the round of 16 stage on Tuesday night after a penalty shootout defeat at Anfield.

Liverpool were outplayed in Paris last week but snatched a first leg victory thanks to Harvey Elliot’s late winner.

Ousmane Dembele levelled the tie 12 minutes into tonight’s second leg with PSG holding their nerve in the decisive shootout with four perfect penalties.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was the hero for his side, keeping out spot kicks from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones to send his side into the last eight.

PSG have been perpetual disappointment in the Champions League over the years, failing to win the competition despite the vast amounts of money invested into the club, reaching the final just once where they lost to Bayern Munich in 2020.

But a younger side without egos, spearheaded by Dembele who now has 29 goals for the season, will now hope to go all the way with Aston Villa or Club Brugge waiting in the next round.

But despite seeing his side bested by the Frech champions, Slot is not convinced PSG go all the way this season.

‘No, I wouldn’t say favourites,’ Slot told Amazon Prime Video.

‘You know how much I like this team and how impressive they were last week and today.

‘It is not easy to play over here in these circumstances when we are so aggressive but they were able to get the win over the line.

‘This is a very good team, but there are many good teams still in the competition.

‘Normally you face these teams in the semi-final and the final but unfortunately we had to face Paris Saint-Germain, one of the richest clubs in the world, already in this round.’

Slot described Tuesday’s clash as ‘the best game of football I’ve ever been involved in’ with their focus now shifting to Sunday’s Carabao Cup final and wrapping up the Premier League title.

‘It was the best game of football where I was ever involved in.

‘Incredible performance, especially compared to last week. First 20/25 minutes, we were all over them, created chance after chance and all of a sudden we were 1-0 down.

‘Probably it was almost the opposite, maybe we ran out of luck because the margins were so small tonight.’
