Tiger Woods is all but certain to miss next month’s Masters after he revealed he has undergone surgery for a ruptured Achilles.

Woods last competed in an official tour event at last summer’s Open at Royal Troon where he missed the cut.

Since then, the 15-time major champion has been seen sparingly, competing in the PNC Championship in December with his son, Charlie, and appearing in a couple of TGL matches in recent months.

Having elected not to play this week’s Players, Woods had been targetting a return at Augusta National next month.

But the 49-year-old now looks set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines after confirming his latest crushing injury setback on social media.

‘As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,’ Woods said.

‘This morning, Dr Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon.

‘I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab, thank you for all the support.’

Dr Stucken added in the statement: ‘The surgery went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery.’

While Woods has not released a time frame for his recovery, he is almost certain to be unable to tee it up at the Masters in April where he has won five times.

But there will also be concern about his availability for the rest of the major season given the serious nature of the injury which usually takes several months to recover from.

The last major of the calendar year is the Open which takes place at Royal Portush on the third weekend of July.

Woods’ body has failed him on numerous occasions throughout his career, especially after he was involved in a serious car crash back in February 2021.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner underwent his latest back surgery in September last year and had been planning a comeback at the Genesis Invitational in February but withdrew after the death of his mother, Kultida.
