Corbetts Cross dies after fall in Cheltenham Gold Cup

Race horse Corbetts Cross has died following a fatal fall in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The JP McManus-owned gelding, ridden by Jack Kennedy, fell during the latter stages of Friday’s show-piece event at the Festival, won by Inothewayurthinkin.
The horse is the second to suffer a fatal injury this week after Springwell Bay, who fell on Thursday in the Jack Richards Novices’ Limited Handicap.
A statement said: ‘In our fifth race of the day, Corbett’s Cross was immediately attended to by our veterinary professionals, but sadly sustained a fatal injury. Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.’
ITV Racing presenter Ed Chamberlin also shared the sad news live on air.
‘I’m afraid though the news about Corbetts Cross is the news we feared,’ Chamberlin said.
‘Which is so sad for JP McManus, taking the gloss off winning with Inothewayurthinkin.
‘JP is a man who loves his horses so much, our condolences to Jack Kennedy, who rode, the whole team. A sad post-script to the Gold Cup I’m afraid.’
Corbetts Cross becomes the 78th horse to suffer a fatal injury at Cheltenham’s Gold Cup Chase since 2000.
214 horses were killed on British racecourses in 2024.
