Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool to sign two players after Carabao Cup final defeat | Football

Jamie Carragher urged Liverpool to sign two ‘attacking players’ after they were beaten by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
Arne Slot will have to wait for his first trophy as Anfield boss after Liverpool lost 2-1 to Newcastle at Wembley.
Goals either side of half-time from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak put Newcastle in control of Sunday’s final.
Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back in injury-time but Newcastle held on to lift their first trophy since 1969 and inflict more paint on Liverpool following a difficult week.
This time last week Liverpool still had hopes of winning a treble but Slot’s side were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain just five days before losing at Wembley.

Carragher was reluctant to be ‘too critical’ of Liverpool given they have opened up a commanding 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League but said the back-to-back defeats highlighted where the squad is lacking.
‘It was probably one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Liverpool in a cup final,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

‘But they’ve given so much this season and they’ve lost one league game. It’s hard to be too critical but it has shined a light on where Liverpool need to improve.
‘The lack of pace in attack is glaring. I feel sorry for Mohamed Salah, he was kept quiet by PSG and he wasn’t great today but he doesn’t get help from the other attackers.
‘The other attackers are good players but they’re not great. They need to go and buy two attackers this summer to play alongside Salah.

‘The last week has shown what they need in the summer. It’s exciting because Liverpool are going to win the league and they still need to improve in some areas.’
Discussing Newcastle’s fantastic achievement, Carragher added: ‘No matter what happens next with Newcastle, they will always be remembered for this.
‘Eddie Howe has massively improved as a coach since coming to Newcastle.
‘I’m gutted Liverpool didn’t win today but if there is any team you would accept losing to, it’s Newcastle. They have such huge support in the North East.
‘Newcastle didn’t just win today, they battered Liverpool, they wiped the floor with them. I find it difficult to be too critical, given what Liverpool look like they will go on to achieve.’
