West Ham make offer to former Man Utd star and look to axe five players | Football

West Ham have made an offer to Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, who is out of contract at the end of the season, but are not confident he will join the club.

The 24-year-old has been at Lille since signing from Manchester United in 2020, although he spent the first season after that move on loan at Portuguese side Boavista.

On his return to France he became a regular in the first team and earned his first four England caps under interim manager Lee Carsley last year.

He is now set for a big move this summer as his current deal expires at the end of the current campaign and West Ham have made their move to snap him up.

The Guardian report that the Hammers have made a contract offer to the England international worth £100,000-a-week, although they are not confident he will accept it.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in the midfielder, who is in the slightly unusual position of being available on a free transfer at 24 years old.

He is believed to want more than the £100,000-a-week West Ham are offering and is holding out for a better deal elsewhere.

West Ham will hope that no better offers emerge for the midfielder and that their proposal becomes the most attractive one on the table, but they are not expecting that situation to emerge.

Whether they land Gomes or not, there is likely to be significant change to the West Ham squad this summer as they want to offload a number of first team players.

The Guardian’s report states that Konstantinos Mavropanos, Emerson Palmieri, Guido Rodríguez and Niclas Füllkrug are all up for sale, while Danny Ings is also on the chopping block.

Graham Potter arrived as Hammers manager in January and is clearly keen on different signings to previous boss Julen Lopetegui as Fullkrug and Rodriguez only arrived at the club last summer.

Rodriguez was a free transfer from Real Betis but Fullkrug was a substantial investment at £27m when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund.

However, the Germany international has scored just two goals in nine Premier League appearances for the club.

There are expected to be further departures as loan signings Carlos Soler and Evan Ferguson are set to return to PSG and Brighton respectively.

The Hammers are not likely to try and make either of those moves permanent ahead of next season.

Other West Ham transfer targets as the transfer window approaches include Lille’s Jonathan David and Genoa’s Koni De Winter.

David is another player out of contract this summer but the prolific forward has attracted interest from a number of top clubs.

Defender De Winter has a contract at Genoa until 2028.
