ESA Solar Orbiter Wind Sun Whirling Twisting
ESA’s Solar Orbiter captured stunning imagery of solar wind flying out from the Sun in a whirling motion for the first time. We can see the solar wind particles spiraling outwards as if they were caught in a cyclone that extends millions of kilometers from Earth’s nearest star.

One of the Solar Orbiter’s big aims is tackling mysteries like why the Sun’s corona is millions of degrees Celsius while the surface is only about 6,000°C, or what drives the solar wind’s acceleration to speeds of hundreds of kilometers per second. The spacecraft itself is built tough, with a heat shield to handle the intense solar radiation, which is up to 13 times what Earth gets, at its closest approach. Its solar arrays tilt to avoid overheating, a trick borrowed from the BepiColombo mission to Mercury.

Metis is currently the only instrument able to see the solar wind’s twisting dance. No other imaging instrument can see – with a high enough resolution in both space and time – the Sun’s inner corona where this dance takes place. (Soon, however, the coronagraph of ESA’s Proba-3 mission might be able to see it too!),” said the ESA.
