Ruben Amorim reveals what he has told Bruno Fernandes about Real Madrid move | Football

Ruben Amorim has shut down the possibility of Bruno Fernandes leaving Manchester United to join Real Madrid this summer.

Amid another bleak season at Old Trafford, Fernandes has remained a key presence in the side with his run of seven goals and three assists in his last seven appearances fuelling a mini-revival of sorts at the club.

United are still hoping to salvage some silverware from what has been a disastrous campaign having reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League – with the Portugal international scoring a hat-trick in the previous round against Real Sociedad.

Reports at the weekend claimed Real Madrid are keen to add Fernandes to their squad of stars, considering a £90million bid to bring the 30-year-old to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Fernandes penned a new long-term contract in Manchester last summer, extending his stay until 2027.

Speaking ahead of United’s trip to Nottingham Forest, Amorim emphatically ruled out a summer exit for his captain.

‘It’s not going to happen,’ Amorim said in response to those rumours.

Amorim was brought to United last November but the brutal reality of the task at hand was quickly made clear, describing the current side as ‘maybe the worst United team in history’ in January.

Asked why he is so confident Fernandes will remain at the club for the final pivotal years of his career, the United boss said: ‘That is the challenge. I want Bruno here.

‘We want to win the Premier League again, we want the best players with us. He’s still so young because he plays 55 games every season.

‘Between assists and goals, he’s there for 30 at least. He’s the player we want here, he’s not going anywhere.

‘We are in control of the situation. I feel that he’s really happy here. He understands what we want to do.

‘He’s one more supporter of Manchester United, he really feels it. Sometimes the frustration that you and everybody sees, and says: ‘it’s not a good thing for the captain’ – it’s a sign that he wants it so bad.

‘This is the kind of player we want. He’s not going anywhere – because I already told him.’

Fernandes’ future at United grew uncertain in the final months of last season, later admitting he did have offers to leave the club.

But the former Sporting Lisbon star was adamant he would remain at the club as long as they wanted him.

‘I’m very happy at the club. Obviously, I want to win trophies. I want to be in the biggest competitions, I want to fight for the big trophies. That’s what I said to the club. That’s what the club said to me that they want to do.’
