The Xiaomi-backed JMEV 01 shows what a budget-friendly Tesla Rodaster could look like, as it starts at just over $41,000 USD in China. This EV was originally known as the SC-01, powered by dual electric motors (one front, one rear) delivering a combined 429 horsepower (320 kW), which gets it from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.9 seconds

Its top speed is around 124 mph (200 km/h), and it weighs in at a relatively light 3,009 lbs (1,365 kg) thanks to a chromium-molybdenum steel tube frame and a mid-mounted battery. Range-wise, it’s claimed to hit 311 miles (500 km) on the NEDC cycle—though real-world figures might be closer to 250-280 miles, given NEDC’s optimism compared to EPA standards.

How does it stack up to its biggest competitor in China, the MG Cyberster? Well, this convertible EV produces up to 510 hp, and does 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, complete with 276-316 miles of range. However, this EV is far heavier at 4,376 lbs and starts around $70,000.

If the JMEV 01 were to somehow make it stateside, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N would be a direct compatitor, a sporty SUV that pumps out 641 hp, hits 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, and weighs 4,861 lbs. Range is around 280 miles, and it’s priced at $66,100. It’s still fun to drive around with adjustable dynamics, but it’s not a low-slung coupe like the JMEV 01, and it’s pricier.

Why consider it over the second-generation Tesla Roadster? Affordability, immediacy, and a classic sports car feel without the $250,000+ price tag. That said, Elon Musk’s creation does boasts insane specs: 0-60 in 1.9 seconds (or even sub-1 with the SpaceX package) and over 620 miles of range.
