James Maddison responds to fans who furiously booed Tottenham after Chelsea defeat | Football

James Maddison implored Tottenham fans to ‘stick with us’ after Spurs players were blasted following their defeat to Chelsea.
Tottenham turned in another meek display at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night with Enzo Fernandez’s second-half header sealing victory for the hosts.
Travelling supporters were heard chanting ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ at Ange Postecoglou as he made changes midway through the second-half. When of those brought off the bench in Pape Sarr appeared to equalise with the goal later ruled out, Postecoglou appeared to turn to the away end and cup his ear.
The tension grew at full-time with Spurs players approaching the away end with several fuming supporters seen voicing their discontent.
Maddison was among those receiving ‘pelters right in your face’ but the midfielder, who reluctantly spoke to Sky Sports after the game, admitted fans have every right to be losing patience with the side.

‘It hurts a lot, it’s been one too many times this season, our fans are rightly disappointed,’ Maddison said.
‘We ae disappointed and we just try hard to search for the answers why we are not getting the results in the tight games.

‘We have lost so many games this season by a one goal margin that we are not on the right side of.
‘I don’t really want to be out here and I’m sure the fans don’t want to hear it either. We just have to try be better going forward.’
On the reaction from away fans, he continued: ‘Yeah they are [an angry bunch] and they have got every right to be.
‘I think it’s still important we go over there and show our appreciation for them even though we are not getting a nice reception, let’s put it that way.

‘They deserve that even though it is not easy to get pelters right in your face. But they pay their money, they travel all over for us and were just as disappointed as they are but were trying to put it right.’
Spurs are slumped 14th in the Premier League table but are still fighting in the Europa League, their last chance of silverware this season with quarter-final ties home and away to Eintracht Frankfurt now looming large.
‘It can still be a super special season if we can lift some silverware,’ Maddison said.
‘We are in the quarter final, two fixtures away from a European final. So it can still be a very special season. So the message is stick with us, we need them as much as they need us.
‘They probably don’t want to be listening to me right now but that’s fine I have to come out and answer your questions but we have to stick together I guess.’
