Westwood Unveils THEMIS V2, a Humanoid Robot That Stands Over 5-Feet-Tall with 200 TOPS of AI Computing Power

Westwood Robotics’ brand-new THEMIS V2 is a life-sized robot that’s about 5 feet 3 inches tall, and it’s got 40 different ways it can move (called degrees of freedom, or DoF). That means it can bend and twist a lot, almost like a person. The biggest improvements in this version are its arms, capable of moving in 6 different ways, while its hands (called end-effectors), can move in 7 ways.
This robot isn’t just about looking cool with fancy moving parts. It’s loaded with special motors called BEAR actuators (short for Back-drivable Electromechanical Actuator for Robotics), which are a big deal at Westwood, the company that made it. These motors let the robot move smoothly, almost like a person, while staying safe—super important if it’s around people or fragile stuff.

This robot can walk as fast as a human and even run up to 10 km/h (about 6.2 mph), and it’s built to move well in the real world, doing things like running, jumping over obstacles like in parkour, and staying balanced even when things get wild. On the techy side, it’s got some smart gadgets inside, like a sensor called the 3DM-CV7-AHRS from MicroStrain by HBK.
This tiny device is like the robot’s sense of balance and motion—it tracks how the robot is tilting or turning (up, down, sideways) and how fast it’s moving, all super accurately 1,000 times a second. That enables it to react quickly to its surroundings, like walking over bumpy ground or dodging an object. Think of it as the robot’s ears and quick reflexes combined. The Robot Operating System (ROS) is basically a toolbox that lets people teach it new tricks or change how it acts.
