Virgil van Dijk says progress has been made in contract discussions, but he still does not know whether he will be at Liverpool next season or not.

Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract at the end of the season and could leave the Reds on free transfers.

We are now just weeks away from that happening, with none of the three iconic players signing new deals as yet.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to move to Real Madrid, but there has been much less firm reporting on where Van Dijk or Salah could be playing next season.

The Dutchman has given the latest on his situation, saying that internal discussions have been ongoing, but no firm decision has been made yet.

‘There is progress, yeah. I don’t know, we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see,’ said the 33-year-old.

‘I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them at Fulham. But I want them to be there against West Ham on Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.’

Van Dijk turns 34 in July while Salah turns 33 in June this year, with the ages of the club legends the reason Liverpool have been hesitant to sign them up to new deals.

Both are happy to stay but it appears that they want longer deals than Liverpool wish to offer them in the final few years of their careers.

Clearly they are still performing at a very high level, though, with Van Dijk captaining the Premier League leaders and Salah the top scorer in the division this season with 27.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy feels confident that Van Dijk will stay at Anfield beyond this season, but is not so sure that Salah will.

‘I’ve got a good feeling Virgil will stay,’ Murphy said on talkSPORT’s Inside Liverpool. ‘I don’t know anything for sure but what I’m saying is I’ve heard enough good positive things from the people I do know.

‘I don’t know about Mo, I’d be less confident on that one.’

Like Van Dijk, talks have been ongoing between the club and Salah’s representatives and a report from France suggested he is close to signing a new deal.

Foot Mercato reported last week that the Egyptian is ‘very close’ to agreeing a new two-year deal at Anfield.

While Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid has not been officially confirmed as yet, the England international is expected to make the high profile switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.
