Flying Sun 1000 is an Innovative Drone System That Lights Up the Night with 288 LEDs

The Flying Sun 1000 from Freefly Systems is a clever drone system that illuminates the night, literally, making it feel like daytime with its strong LED lights. This flying machine is based on their Alta X quadcopter, a tough drone that can lift up to 33 pounds.
It’s got 288 LEDs pointing downward, set on four panels with 72 lights each, hooked under the drone’s propeller arms. Together, these lights put out 300,000 lumens—super bright light that comes from above and spreads out, cutting down on shadows and harsh glare.

Flying Sun 1000 can shine a 60-degree spotlight. At 100 ft (30.5 m) high, it covers 14,000 sq ft (1,301 sq m) with a brightness of 10 foot-candles. At 316 ft (96 m), it lights up a huge 137,000 sq ft (12,728 sq m), but the brightness drops to 1 foot-candle.
It can run on its own batteries (two 16-Ah lithium ones) for 5-10 minutes, but usually Flying Sun 1000 is tethered. That lets it stay powered by an outside source, like a 5kW+ 240V generator or an electric car, so it can keep going for extended periods.
One caveat: it costs $59,995 and is aimed at businesses as well as government agencies. There’s a slightly less powerful version, the Flying Sun 500, but even that will set you back $49,995.
