Game Designer Spends 1-Year on Toy Story 2 Unreal Engine 5 Remake, This is the Final Result

Game designer Zachary McPhink from Level reDesign worked for a year on a Toy Story 2 Unreal Engine 5 remake called Toy Story 2: Reassembled. The goal was to update the old 3D platformer game, first seen on PS1, N64, and other systems, while keeping its classic, nostalgic feel.
The remake uses Unreal Engine 5 to make the locations, lights, and details look better, but it skips photorealism to hold onto the cartoony Toy Story style. Buzz Lightyear’s main moves—like jumping, swinging, shooting lasers, and flying with his jetpack—are brought back, along with platform hopping and exploring. Some of the later updates added fighting moves, new enemy behaviors, and smoother animations, though some stand-in pieces are still there.

The main goal was to rebuild levels (like Andy’s house) with nicer graphics and smoother controls. At the end of 2024, about 40% of the first level’s mechanics were done, with more work happening on the art and finishing touches, but fast forward to today, and we can see that most of the work has been finished. What’s left? Some of the enemy animations, dialogue cinematic camera shots, a save system, level select, an end screen, and knocking out a few more bugs.
