Bungie Releases New Marathon Gameplay Trailer, Previews Cybernetic Mercenary Scavenging Lost Colony

Bungie’s Marathon just got a new gameplay overview trailer, and it previews ‘Runner’, the cybernetic mercenary scavenging a lost colony. It’s set to be released on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, flipping the script by focusing on a multiplayer extraction shooter format but with Bungie’s polished gunplay and a cyberpunk vibe.

What’s the game about? Well, the colony’s 30,000 inhabitants vanished mysteriously, leaving behind rival factions, hostile AI, and other players to contend with. It’s PvPvE (player vs. player vs. environment), where you drop into persistent zones solo or in squads of up to three, complete quests, grab loot, and try to extract alive.

You pick from four Runners—Void, Glitch, Blackbird, and Locus—each with unique abilities that mix hero shooter flair into the tactical extraction formula. Expect vibrant, colorful visuals, deep lore, and customization for weapons and builds, all wrapped in Bungie’s signature feel-good shooting mechanics.

There are tons of extraction shooter games out there, but Marathon shines with its sci-fi setting, hero-like abilities, and Bungie’s polish. For longtime fans, Marathon brings back memories of the studio’s early days. The first three games had loyal fans who loved their story and mood, so this new multiplayer version feels like a sweet nod to them with a fresh, exciting spin.
