Blue Origin NS-31 Mission Successfully Launches with First All-Female Crew Since 1963

Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission successfully launched from Launch Site One in West Texas at 9:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. CDT) this morning, marking the 11th crewed flight of the New Shepard rocket. This was a historic suborbital flight, notable for being the first all-female crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
The crew was made up of mission leader Lauren Sánchez (a journalist), Katy Perry (a famous pop singer), Gayle King (a host on CBS Mornings), Aisha Bowe (a former NASA rocket scientist), Amanda Nguyen (a space biology researcher), and Kerianne Flynn (a movie producer). The trip lasted about 11 minutes, climbing to around 346,800 feet (106 km), passing the Kármán line (62 miles/100 km), which marks the edge of space. Everyone on board got to float weightless for a few minutes and see Earth from way up before landing back in the West Texas desert with parachutes.

Aisha Bowe conducted three experiments, like studying plants as well as how bodies work, and brought along postcards from students to space. Amanda Nguyen took a hospital bracelet to show when they hit “zero-G,” as a sign of her own healing. Katy Perry carried a daisy for her daughter, Daisy.
After landing, Perry kissed the ground, and the crew shared heartfelt thoughts about how much the trip meant to them. Jeff Bezos was there to greet them when they got back, along with their family and friends. Blue Origin hasn’t announced a specific date for the next New Shepard flight, but the program continues to focus on suborbital tourism and research, with 47 people flown to date.
