BMW’s HypersonX Sound System Can Generate a Dynamic, Multi-Dimensional Soundscape for Neue Klasse EVs

BMW’s new HypersonX sound system makes a lively, all-around sound experience for their Neue Klasse electric vehicles. The engineers from the Sound Design Studio got ideas from nature, art, and science, using sounds like rustling leaves or other outdoor noises to build a one-of-a-kind, immersive audio vibe that’s different from anything else.
It’s not just for playing songs—it’s about making the whole drive feel special with sound. The studio created 43 different sound signals to enhance driving modes (Personal + Sport) and interactions like welcome sounds, giving the same kind of excitement you’d get from a roaring gas engine in a quiet electric car. It mixes natural sounds (like noises from plants, such as leaves moving) and even human touches, like a choir of BMW workers singing in different languages, to to add warmth.

HypersonX works with BMW’s Operating System X and a new audio control box to create a dynamic, multi-dimensional soundscape. It uses a trick called spatial modulation, making sounds move around in a 3D space (like switching layers when you accelerate) to match how the car feels. With more than nine million sound options created by a computer and checked by people, it’s super flexible, tweaking itself based on how you drive or what you choose, like using the steering wheel buttons in the Vision Neue Klasse X concept.
It’s tightly built into the Neue Klasse’s design, using the quiet of electric cars to make a custom sound experience inside. It focuses on middle and lower tones for a cozy, balanced feel, going nicely with the car’s simple interior and easy-to-use iDrive X system. Put simply, HypersonX is a forward-thinking, EV-centric soundscape that prioritizes emotional driving cues and dynamic adaptation
The unique sound spectrum of HypersonX plays a major role in giving a Neue Klasse model its own, highly distinctive character acoustically. Through our focus on precision, warmth and lightness, we can create a direct emotional connection between the driver and their vehicle,” said Renzo Vitale, Creative Director of Sound Design BMW Group.
